Unicode has two symbols for unknown characters:

  • □ (WHITE SQUARE, U+25A1) - Replaces a missing or unsupported Unicode character.
  • � (REPLACEMENT CHARACTER, U+FFFD) - Replaces an invalid or unrecognizable character. Indicates a Unicode error.
